A Brief History of McKinney
McKinney’s story began in 1848 when the Texas Legislature established the town as the county seat of Collin County on March 16, 1848. The city was named for Collin McKinney, a pioneering land surveyor who helped draft and signed the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico in 1836. On May 3, 1848, twelve yoke of oxen pulled McKinney’s first building to the northwest corner of the downtown square, marking the beginning of what would become a thriving community.
The town’s growth accelerated when the Houston and Texas Central Railroad arrived in 1872, transforming McKinney from a small settlement into an important commercial hub. Situated in some of the state’s most fertile farmland, McKinney became the main distribution point for surrounding Collin County as farmers shipped their crops through the railroad. By 1926, Collin County was the sixth largest cotton-producing county in the nation, cementing McKinney’s importance as an agricultural center.
The booming economy of the late 1800s brought bigger and better facilities to the county seat. By 1885, the city had newspapers, banks, flour mills, an opera house, churches and two thousand residents. The Texas Cotton Mill Company opened in the late 1800s and remained a major employer well into the 20th century, fostering a spirit of entrepreneurship that helped McKinney weather economic challenges throughout its history.
Following World War II, McKinney made the transition from a mostly agriculture-based economy to one that included industry and manufacturing. By the mid-1980s, the town had become a commuter center for residents who worked in Plano and Dallas, evolving into the vibrant suburban community we know today.
