More Than a Polish — A Health Assessment
A professional cleaning at MDRN Dental Studio removes what no toothbrush can: mineralized tartar that has bonded to tooth surfaces and crept below the gumline. Our hygienists use ultrasonic and hand scalers to clean every surface thoroughly, then polish the enamel to leave teeth smooth and resistant to new buildup. But the cleaning is only part of what happens at your visit. Every appointment includes periodontal charting, an oral cancer screening, and a direct review of findings with Dr. Steven so you leave with a complete picture of your oral health, not just clean teeth.

Not All Cleanings Are the Same
Types of Professional Cleanings
The right type of cleaning depends on the current state of your gum health, your history, and how long it has been since your last visit. Dr. Steven and our hygienists determine which is appropriate at your appointment.
Prophylaxis (Routine Cleaning)
The standard cleaning for patients with healthy gums. Removes plaque and tartar from above and just below the gumline, then polishes tooth surfaces. Recommended every six months for most adults and children.
Periodontal Maintenance
For patients with a history of gum disease. More frequent visits — typically every three to four months — with deeper cleaning to prevent recurrence. Once gum disease has been treated, maintenance is the difference between stability and relapse.
Full-Mouth Debridement
When heavy tartar buildup prevents a thorough exam, a full-mouth debridement removes enough buildup to allow proper evaluation. This is sometimes needed for patients returning after an extended gap in care.
Gross Debridement
A preliminary cleaning performed when calculus deposits are too extensive for a standard cleaning in a single visit. Often followed by a comprehensive exam once the tissue has been cleared.
Why It Matters
What Professional Cleanings Actually Prevent
Regular cleanings are not just about fresh breath or a brighter smile. They interrupt disease processes that develop silently and cost far more to treat once they progress.
- Tartar cannot be removed at home — Once plaque mineralizes into tartar (calculus), no amount of brushing or flossing will remove it. Only professional instruments can scale it off without damaging enamel.
- Gum disease starts silently — Gingivitis and early periodontitis are painless. Professional cleanings disrupt bacterial colonies before they cause irreversible bone and tissue loss.
- Systemic health connections — Oral bacteria have been linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes complications, and preterm birth. Regular cleanings reduce the bacterial load in your mouth.
- Early detection at every visit — Your hygienist and Dr. Steven examine your teeth and soft tissue at each cleaning — catching cavities, lesions, and changes that you would never notice yourself.
- Fresher breath long-term — Persistent bad breath is usually caused by bacteria in tartar deposits and below the gumline. Cleanings address the source, not just the symptom.
- Lower long-term cost — A cleaning costs a fraction of a filling, crown, or extraction. Consistent preventative care is the most cost-effective dental strategy available.
The MDRN Difference
Risk-Based, Not Routine
Most dental offices schedule every patient for a cleaning every six months by default. At MDRN Dental Studio, Dr. Steven's Kois Center training means every patient receives a formal caries risk and periodontal risk assessment that determines the appropriate cleaning frequency for their specific situation. Some patients genuinely do fine at six-month intervals. Others — patients with active gum disease, dry mouth, diabetes, frequent cavities, or immune conditions — need more frequent care to stay stable. Your cleaning schedule is based on evidence, not a billing cycle.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
How often do I need a dental cleaning?
Most adults and children benefit from cleanings every six months. Patients with a history of gum disease, higher cavity risk, dry mouth, diabetes, or other factors may need cleanings every three to four months. Dr. Steven determines the right frequency based on a formal risk assessment — not a blanket schedule.
Why can't I just brush really well instead of getting a professional cleaning?
Brushing and flossing remove soft plaque, but plaque that has hardened into tartar cannot be removed by any home care tool. Tartar forms in as little as 24 to 72 hours and adheres firmly to tooth surfaces. Only professional scalers can remove it safely. Even patients with excellent home care develop tartar in areas that are difficult to reach.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning (prophylaxis) addresses the tooth surface above and just slightly below the gumline. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) goes further below the gumline to remove tartar from the root surface inside infected periodontal pockets. Deep cleanings are performed under local anesthesia and are used to treat active gum disease, not routine maintenance.
Does a cleaning hurt?
Most patients experience little to no discomfort during a routine cleaning. Patients with inflamed gums or significant tartar buildup may notice sensitivity, particularly near the gumline. Topical anesthetic is available if needed, and our hygienists work at a pace that is comfortable for you.
How long does a cleaning take?
A routine prophylaxis takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes when combined with your exam. Periodontal maintenance appointments may take slightly longer depending on the level of buildup. First-visit appointments include a full exam, X-rays, and charting in addition to the cleaning, so plan for 60 to 90 minutes.
Is a dental cleaning the same as a dental checkup?
They are typically performed together but serve different purposes. The cleaning removes tartar and polishes teeth. The checkup is Dr. Steven's comprehensive examination — evaluating decay, gum health, bite, jaw joints, and oral soft tissue. Both happen at your preventative appointment.
What if I have not been to the dentist in years?
No judgment. Many patients have gaps in care. Depending on the amount of buildup, we may perform a debridement before the full exam and cleaning. Dr. Steven will assess exactly what you need and build a realistic plan to restore your oral health without pressure.
I have sensitive teeth. Will a cleaning make it worse?
Temporary sensitivity after a cleaning is common, especially if tartar buildup has been shielding exposed root surfaces. This usually resolves within a few days. Let your hygienist know about your sensitivity before the appointment — we can adjust technique, use desensitizing agents, and take breaks as needed.
