What to Expect

Dental Implant

Dental implants replace the root and crown of a missing tooth permanently. The process takes several months — here's exactly what each step involves.

Total visits: 5–7 appointments
Total timeline: 6–12 months (depending on bone grafting needs)

A dental implant is the most durable, natural-feeling tooth replacement available. The titanium post fuses with your jawbone through a process called osseointegration, providing a permanent foundation for a custom crown. The timeline varies based on whether extraction, bone grafting, and which healing route is appropriate for your anatomy.

If your tooth is being extracted and the implant will be placed the same day, see the Immediate Implant guide →

Your Appointments, Step by Step

1

Consultation + CBCT Scan

30–45 min

Dr. Steven reviews your medical and dental history, takes a CBCT (3D) scan to evaluate bone volume and anatomy, and determines whether you are a good candidate. He'll explain your treatment timeline, discuss whether extraction or bone grafting is needed first, and present your options. You'll leave with a clear roadmap.

2

Extraction + Bone Graft (if needed)

30–60 min

If the failing tooth is still present, it is removed at this appointment. Bone grafting material is placed in the socket to preserve and build bone volume for the implant. This step is skipped if the site is already healed. Healing time for a grafted socket is typically 3–4 months before implant placement.

3

Implant Placement

60–90 min

The implant (a small titanium post) is placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia — sedation is available. Dr. Steven uses digital planning from your CBCT scan for precise placement. After placement, you will follow one of two paths: Route A — a healing abutment is placed and the gum closes around it, no second surgery needed. Route B — a cover screw is placed and the gum is sutured over the implant to protect it during healing.

4

Post-Op Check

10–15 min

A brief follow-up about 2 weeks after implant surgery to confirm the site is healing correctly, sutures have dissolved, and there is no infection. Questions and concerns are addressed here.

5

Healing Check + Scan

20–45 min

At 3–4 months after placement, Dr. Steven confirms osseointegration (bone fusion) is complete and takes a new scan to plan the final crown. Route A patients move directly to crown delivery from here. Route B patients need one more step.

6

Final Scan (Route B only)

~20 min

For Route B patients, a minor procedure under local anesthesia uncovers the implant and attaches a healing abutment, allowing the gum to shape around the implant. A scan is taken for the crown.

7

Crown Delivery

20–30 min

Your custom implant crown is attached to the implant. Dr. Steven checks the fit, bite, and appearance. The crown looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth. With proper care, an implant can last a lifetime.

What to Know Before You Come In

  • If you smoke, discuss cessation — smoking significantly increases implant failure rates
  • Controlled diabetes does not rule out implants, but must be disclosed at your consultation
  • Arrange a driver for the surgery day if you are using IV sedation or oral conscious sedation
  • Wear comfortable clothing and avoid tight sleeves or collars at surgical appointments
  • Fill any prescriptions before your implant placement appointment so they are ready when you get home
  • Plan to take the day off after implant surgery — most patients return to normal activity the next day
