What to Expect

KöR Whitening

A two-phase whitening system combining at-home conditioning and in-office treatment. Effective for staining that standard whitening can't fully address — including tetracycline discoloration.

Total visits: 4–5 appointments
At-home phase: ~2 weeks nightly
Results: Permanent with monthly maintenance

Most whitening systems lose effectiveness quickly because saliva deactivates the gel within 25–35 minutes of application. KöR solves this with refrigerated gel and KöR-Seal trays that block saliva from mixing with the whitening agent — keeping the gel active for the full treatment window.

The result is a level of whitening that standard take-home systems simply cannot match. KöR is particularly well-suited for patients who have tried whitening before without the results they wanted, have age-resistant discoloration, or are dealing with tetracycline staining — historically one of the most difficult types of staining to treat.

For everyday dietary staining (coffee, tea, red wine) with no prior whitening history, our Opalescence take-home whitening → is a simpler and equally effective starting point.

Your Appointments, Step by Step

1

Consultation + Shade Assessment

~30 min

Dr. Steven evaluates your teeth, documents your current shade, and determines which KöR protocol is appropriate for your case. KöR offers several levels of treatment — from standard whitening to KöR Ultra-T, which is specifically formulated for tetracycline staining. He'll review realistic outcome expectations based on the type and depth of your staining, and discuss any existing restorations that will not change color with whitening.

2

Custom KöR-Seal Tray Fabrication

~20 min

Precise impressions or a digital scan are taken to fabricate your custom KöR-Seal trays. These trays are engineered differently from standard whitening trays — they seal at the gumline to prevent saliva and sulcular fluid from mixing with the gel. Saliva contains enzymes that rapidly deactivate most whitening gels (within 25–35 minutes). The KöR-Seal design keeps the gel active for the full 6–8 hours of wear, which is what makes KöR fundamentally more effective.

3

At-Home Conditioning Phase

2 weeks at home (nightly)

Your KöR gel and trays are dispensed refrigerated — KöR gel is stored cold to preserve potency. You wear the trays nightly for 6–8 hours over approximately two weeks. This phase gradually opens dentinal tubules and conditions the teeth, making them more receptive to the deeper in-office treatment that follows. The gel must be kept refrigerated between uses.

4

In-Office KöR Treatment

60–90 min

The in-office phase uses a stronger KöR gel applied chairside. Because your teeth have been conditioned by the at-home phase, the in-office treatment drives whitening deeper than either phase could achieve alone. This appointment completes the active whitening process and is where the most dramatic shade changes occur.

5

Follow-Up + Maintenance Plan

15–20 min

Dr. Steven evaluates your final result and establishes a maintenance protocol. Unlike most whitening systems, KöR results are designed to be permanent with simple periodic maintenance — typically one night of at-home whitening per month using your trays. As long as the maintenance schedule is followed, the results do not regress.

What to Know Before You Start

  • KöR gel must be stored refrigerated — this is not optional; heat and light degrade the formula
  • Whitening only affects natural tooth structure — crowns, veneers, and bonding will not change color
  • Active cavities and gum disease must be treated before whitening
  • Some sensitivity during the at-home phase is normal; KöR's desensitizing protocol minimizes this significantly
  • Tetracycline staining requires longer treatment and more realistic expectation-setting at your consultation — full resolution is possible for many patients, but the degree of improvement varies
  • Maintenance is one night per month after the active treatment is complete — without it, results can gradually fade
